Coroner releases name of teen fatally shot in west Belleville
A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot Monday on the west side of Belleville, authorities said.
Di’Rico V. Washington died after being shot multiple times, according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.
The teen was pronounced deceased at 6:23 p.m. by an emergency room doctor at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Dye said.
Washington’s last known address was 135 N. 81st St., which is where the shooting occurred, the coroner said.
Belleville Police were dispatched at 5:31 p.m. to the 100 block of North 81st Street in reference to multiple shots fired, according to a news release from the Belleville Police department.
“Upon arrival, officers located a 16-year-old male subject on the ground in front of a residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds,” according to the news release. “First aid was provided by Belleville Police and Fire” and the teen was taken to Memorial Hospital.
“This investigation is in the beginning stages, and more information will be released as appropriate,” the department said in the statement.
According to a statement from East St. Louis School District 189, Washington was a student in the district and counseling is available to students and staff members.
