A woman was shot after picking up a male relative who police say might have been the target of the gunfire.

Cahokia Heights Police say a man banged on the door of the police department at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, telling officers that someone was shooting at him. It was then officers learned that a woman he was with was still in the car with a bullet wound in her shoulder, said Cahokia Heights Police Chief Thomas Trice.

The injuries were not life-threatening, he said.

“Preliminary findings make us believe this was a shooting that happened outside of Cahokia Heights and came into Cahokia Heights,” Trice said. “Right now it is unclear as to what city the victim was shot in. But, we currently have a police investigation is underway.”

Trice said the woman, whose name has not been released, appears to have picked up the man in her car.

“”It appears the female is innocent in this because the gentleman who was being targeted for this called her for help,” said Trice. “She picked him up somewhere outside of the city limits.”

The woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
