Mayor says no one is talking to police after 2 shot dead, 5 hurt in So. Illinois
As police investigate a Mount Vernon mass shooting that left two men dead and five people injured, the town’s mayor said officers are “not getting any cooperation” from people who attended a gathering of 100 to 150 people.
One woman has been arrested and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and obstruction of justice while other arrests are expected, according to a Mount Vernon Police Department news release.
“It is very disheartening to me at this time that although this non-sanctioned event was attended by more than 100 to 150 people, we are not getting any cooperation with the attendees on what transpired,” Mayor John Lewis said in a statement. “That is unacceptable in this community.”
Zomarrius Williams, 20, of Mount Vernon and Demonta Woodward, 26, of Mounds died in the shooting reported at 12:49 a.m. Sunday in the 600 block of South 15th Street, the Mount Vernon Police Department said in a news release.
Jerria J. Smith, 22, of Mount Vernon is the person who was arrested and charged. She has a court hearing scheduled for Monday afternoon in the Jefferson County Courthouse.
The conditions of the five persons injured were not available.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Mount Vernon Police Department at 618-242-2132 or CrimeStoppers at 618-242-8477 (TIPS).
