Belleville police investigate overnight burglary at Althoff Catholic High School
Belleville police officers and detectives are investigating an overnight burglary at Althoff Catholic High School, the police department said Tuesday morning.
“At approximately midnight, suspects were observed entering the school” at 5401 W. Main St., the department said in a statement.
A window in the cafeteria area was broken and two adult suspects were seen on surveillance video, Althoff Principal Jonathan Birdsong said.
“When our staff started arriving this morning, one of our employees noticed the window that was broke into,” he said.
Some food and milk were reported missing, Birdsong said. No other damage was found and the police officers searched the entire building to make sure no suspects remained in the school.
The suspects appear to be older than high school age, Birdsong said. They were only seen on surveillance video in the cafeteria area.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” the statement said. “Additional updates will be provided as appropriate.”
The school canceled classes for Tuesday.
“Obviously a bad situation but when something happens, you want to make sure that your protocols and that work and thanks to the Belleville police for their partnership obviously this morning and working with us and making sure things were safe,” Birdsong said.
Birdsong notified parents of the incident with a morning email.
“We will continue to review and update our processes as necessary, but rest assured that the safety of our staff and students remains our first and most important priority,” it said.
