A first-degree murder charge has been filed against a man in connection with the weekend shooting death of a 47-year-old man at his Fairview Heights home over the weekend.

Roosevelt C. Washington, 41, was charged Monday in the death of David L. Weary, authorities said.

Washington “was known to the victim, and there are no other suspects,” the Fairview Heights Police Department said in a news release.

No other details about the homicide were released.

Washington was being held in the St. Clair County Jail Tuesday morning. Court records do not list an attorney for him and a court date has not been scheduled.

Weary was pronounced dead early Sunday at his home at 100 Bountiful Drive, according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Officers were dispatched about 11:55 p.m. Saturday to a disturbance in the 100 block of Bountiful Drive. Before they arrived, another caller reported that shots had been fired and someone had been shot, according to a Fairview Heights Police Department news release on Sunday.

Based on a physical description, police spotted the person several blocks away and arrested him without incident, according to the news release. A firearm was recovered.

A large crowd gathered, prompting police to request assistance from other law enforcement agencies to help secure the area.
