Dog broke free from chain around her neck. Now, the ‘true survivor’ needs a new home

A dog broke free from a chain around her neck — and now, the “true survivor” needs a new home.

“Miracle’s story began in chains,” a North Carolina animal shelter wrote March 14 on Facebook. “Not just figuratively — literally. She was tethered, forgotten, suffering. A rusted chain had been wrapped so tightly around her neck that, as she grew, it embedded into her skin. But Miracle did something incredible. She took a chance.”

The Fayetteville Animal Protection Society said the mixed-breed dog managed to break loose, ending months of being tethered and isolated.

“She ran — with a piece of that chain still inside her neck — because something inside her knew there had to be more,” the shelter wrote. “A stranger found her. He could have looked the other way. He could have decided it wasn’t his problem. But instead, he took a chance and got her help.”

Miracle was rescued in October and is now up for adoption. The 2-year-old pup, also known as Mira, is loyal when she feels safe around people, the shelter wrote in a separate social media post and an email to McClatchy News.

“Mira’s personality is extremely goofy and considering her past, she’s ridiculously confident (and that sometimes gets her into trouble as she realizes ‘oh no, maybe I should be nervous’),” the shelter wrote. “Physical touch is her love language and she loves to (playfully) nibble on the hands of those that love her.”

Miracle landed at the animal society after spending time at another facility, where she reportedly was at risk of being put down. People banded together to get her a foster home and donate to her surgery.

“Veterinarians removed the embedded chain, treated her infection, and gave her the first real chance at a pain-free life,” the animal society wrote. “Months passed, and Miracle healed. She has learned what it feels like to be cared for, to be loved. She is still learning — socialization doesn’t come naturally when you’ve spent most of your life in isolation.”

After receiving so much help, the loving dog needs “one more person to take a chance on her,” the shelter said. As of March 19, her adoption profile was still listed on the animal organization’s website.

“She will need a patient, dog-savvy adopter that understands her quirks and loves her all the more for them,” the shelter wrote. “With the right adopter, Mira will continue to blossom into the happy, confident dog she was always meant to be.”

The shelter is in Fayetteville, a roughly 60-mile drive south from Raleigh. Details about the facility’s adoption process can be found at fapspet.org.
