Those who love to dine out on Mexican cuisine may be pleased to check out Food Network’s recent selection for the “most charming small-town restaurant” in Illinois.

In its Jan. 31 write up, the food-focused cable channel selected Campeche Restaurant in Galena, located in the far northern part of the state, as its representative for the Land Lincoln.

“Family owned since 1978, Campeche Restaurant delivers authentic Mexican food. Each bite makes you feel like you’re part of the three-generation family that owns the joint,” Food Network’s Ni’Kesia Pannell writes. “Known for homemade margaritas and pico de gallo, Campeche — named after the family’s hometown in Mexico — is where you’ll indulge in delicious bites without breaking the bank.”

Campeche did not respond to an emailed request for comment, but in a Feb. 4 Instagram post on the feature thanked the public and its employees.

On its website, the restaurant describes its history as one steeped in the family who launched and owns the business, including the original CEO and founder.

“Our family recipes have been passed down for 3 generations including her Famous Homemade Margaritas and Pico de Gallo,” the site reads. “The company first started in 1978 in the Chicagoland area and has been family owned ever since. With 5 locations in the North Side of Chicago and the latest one here in Galena, IL.”

The restaurant’s large menu includes a variety of fajitas, burritos and tacos, along with other traditional cuisine like chile rellenos and chimichangas. The spot also offers appetizers, mixed drinks, a la carte items and gluten free and vegetarian options.

In addition, there is a limited brunch menu offered from noon to 3 p.m. Sundays. Prices generally range from about $16 to $26 per dish.

Campeche has a 3.6 of 5 star rating on popular food review site Yelp, which lists popular dishes as the steak tacos, seafood soup and queso fundido.

The restaurant is located at 230 North Commerce St., Galena, IL 61036. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m, Friday from 4:30 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is closed Wednesday.

Galena, which is more than a five-hour drive from Belleville, is no stranger to national features. In 2023, it was selected by Travel and Leisure magazine as one of the “most beautiful towns” in the U.S. and was also named a “best Thanksgiving town” by Country Living.

Food Network’s picks for the most charming small-town eateries in surrounding states include Marguerite in Racine, Wis., Market Street Grill in Wabash, Ind., Buckhead Mountain Grill in Bellevue, Ky., Juniper & Olive in Jewell, Iowa, and 4th Street Pizza in Hermann, Mo.
