Going to the Cardinals’ home opener? Here’s what you can expect from the weather.

Are you heading to the St. Louis Cardinals home opener? If so, you might want to bundle up.

According to Jayson Gosselin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service of St. Louis, temperatures will hover around 50 degrees when the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates starts at 3:15 p.m. He added those temperatures then will dip into the 40s toward the end of the game.

Combined with mostly overcast skies and sustained winds at 20 miles per hour with gusts up to 35 mph, Goesslin said conditions will feel even colder and he recommends dressing warmly.

“It looks cool in terms of temperatures,” he said Wednesday afternoon. “For April 7, it’s going to be fairly chilly. There may be a peak here or there of sunshine but it looks mostly cloudy as well. I would say to bundle up especially with the most cloudy and overcast conditions and the wind.

“When you don’t have sun and you have wind it’s going to feel quite a bit cooler than the actual air temperature.”

For the good news: No significant rain appears in the forecast. As of Wednesday afternoon, the NWS only shows a 20% chance of rain Thursday.

“You can’t rule out an isolated shower towards the end of the game,” Goesslin said. “But, overall, it looks dry and nothing that would rain it out.”

While the game starts at 3:15 p.m., festivities actually begin at noon when the Busch Stadium gates open. Goesslin said temperatures will be around 50 degrees then, too.

“The best chance of sunshine actually will be around noon,” he said. “There will be a general trend of an increase of cloudiness throughout the afternoon into the evening with temperatures cooling off toward 6 or 7 o’clock.”

The National Weather Service always recommends keeping plugged into the forecast as it develops, www.weather.gov.
