Metro-east at risk for another round of potentially severe hail, thunderstorms
The metro-east and greater St. Louis area may see severe thunderstorms Monday night, with a possibility of large hail.
The National Weather Service St. Louis office reports showers and thunderstorms are likely in Belleville Monday night, although tornadoes are not expected.
“The primary threat looks like it would be 1-inch hail,” Jared Maples, meteorologist with the NWS St. Louis office, told the News-Democrat Monday morning.
The severe weather threat comes one week after a likely tornado damaged homes in Trenton and downed power lines in Clinton County.
A localized wind gust can’t be ruled out for Monday night, Maples said, and Belleville is most likely to see any severe storms between midnight and 2 a.m.
“Though widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected all night, the severe threat will only last about an hour at any given location,” the NWS forecast reads.
The thunderstorms are expected to develop along a cold front, as Belleville sees low temperatures forecast at 56 degrees Fahrenheit Monday.
Maples recommended residents keep up-to-date on the forecast, have multiple ways of receiving severe weather warnings and take precautions to protect outdoor vehicles or other items that could be affected by hail.
