Glen Carbon man arrested for shooting house guest after being confronted for beating his wife, police say

Authorities charged a Glen Carbon man Tuesday for shooting 43-year-old Steven Flack, of Belleville, on Sunday night.

Steven McGauley, 46, was hosting Flack at his home over the weekend when McGauley began battering his wife, according to a press release. Flack reportedly confronted McGauley about his actions which led to a physical fight between the two men.

McGauley then grabbed a firearm and shot Flack multiple times, according to the release.

Madison County Sheriff’s officers responded to the home at 110 Hillcrest Drive on Sunday night to find Flack unresponsive in the backyard. He was taken to Anderson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Capt. Mike Dixon with the sheriff’s department announced at the time that several other people were at the house when officers arrived, and one person, who is believed to have shot the man, was arrested.

Police announced Tuesday that man who was arrested was McGauley, who was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder and domestic battery.

He was taken into custody and transported to the Madison County Jail, where he was held Tuesday pending further investigations and a case review by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Flack died of gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen, according to a statement released Tuesday by Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn.

Glen Carbon and Maryville police officers assisted at the scene. The sheriff’s department is continuing the investigation. Funeral arrangements are pending.
