Southwestern Illinois counties report 118 new coronavirus cases Monday
At least 118 more metro-east residents have contracted coronavirus, local officials announced Monday.
Madison County reported 63 new cases of the virus, and St. Clair County reported 47. Elsewhere in the metro-east region, there were five new cases in Monroe County and three in Randolph County.
The state defines the metro-east as St. Clair, Madison, Clinton, Randolph, Monroe, Bond and Washington counties. None of the other counties in the region reported changes to their coronavirus statistics Monday.
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Monday that the metro-east region’s positivity rate increased slightly from 9.6% on Thursday to 9.7% on Friday. The positivity rate is the percentage of coronavirus tests performed that were positive. The rate the state calculates is based on a week’s worth of tests.
It is a metric state officials use to decide whether to impose restrictions on businesses and activities in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading.
Illinois provides the rate for each region at dph.illinois.gov/regionmetrics. Information on the website is delayed by three days, so Friday, Sept. 4, was the latest date available on Monday.
St. Clair County’s latest rundown
St. Clair County has now recorded a total of 6,306 COVID-19 diagnoses and 176 deaths since the coronavirus pandemic began. COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
The daily positivity rate rose from 7.1% on Sunday to 8.5% on Monday. The daily positivity rate is the percentage of positives from a day’s worth of coronavirus tests.
The county’s seven-day positivity rate was 6.9% as of Monday.
Officials said Monday that 50 people were receiving treatment for COVID-19 in St. Clair County hospitals, down from 62 on Sunday. Four of the patients were on ventilators.
The newly diagnosed St. Clair County residents ranged in age from under 10 years old to their 70s.
No new cases were reported Monday at long-term care facilities in St. Clair County.
Madison County’s latest reports
Madison County has reported a total of 4,403 cases and 105 deaths.
The county’s daily positivity rate Monday was 12.57% and its seven-day positivity rate was 7.31%.
As of Monday, there were 34 COVID-19 patients in Madison County hospitals, with five on ventilators.
Illinois reports new cases, deaths
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced 1,381 new cases of the virus and eight additional virus-related deaths on Monday.
A total of 250,961 Illinois residents have now tested positive for COVID-19, and 8,179 people have died. More than 4.4 million tests have been conducted for COVID-19.

ZIP codes with fewer than five cases of the virus are not reported by health officials. The number in parentheses after each ZIP code below reflects the change from the previous day’s cumulative total. A decrease reflects a correction.
All other information comes from local health departments. The “recoveries” figure refers to the number of people who completed the required isolation period in most counties.

- Thursday, Sept. 10: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fairmount Park, 9301 Collinsville Road in Collinsville
- Saturday, Sept. 12: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Monroe Memorial Church, 1901 Belle St. in Alton
- Sunday, Sept. 13: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, parking lot B next to the Morris University Center at the corner of Circle Drive and Residence Drive
No appointment is necessary. Masks are required.
The IDPH also offers free walk-up and drive-thru COVID-19 testing seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (or until they meet their capacity per day) at the Jackie Joyner Kersee Center in East St. Louis, Highway 64 West, exit 4A.
