One killed when semi crashes into pickup on I-64 near New Baden
One person was killed in a collision between a semi tractor trailer and a passenger car that shut down traffic on Interstate 64 for more than four hours Tuesday.
Illinois State Police say the crash happened at 12:27 p.m. at mile post 25 near New Baden. Police and fire crews at the scene described the crash as “very serous.”
Killed was the driver of the 2020 Ford pickup who St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified as Sharon Foster, 67, of Collins, Missouri.
“Two west bound lanes on Intestate 64 where the collision occurred were shut down,” said Illinois State Police Trooper Joshua Korando. “Motorists were were re-routed to the exit just in front of the crash scene.
According to a statement from state police, both car and semi were westbound when traffic slowed due to traffic congestion. The driver of the 2000 Peterbilt semi-trailer combination failed to notice the stopped traffic and crashed into the read end of Foster’s pickup, the statement said.
The pickup was pushed off the highway to the right-hand side, where it caught fire. Dye said Foster of was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:29 p.m.
The driver of the semi was Terry Bermen, 40, of Potosi, Missouri. He was not injured.
Lebanon Fire Department responded to the accident with aid from from Mascoutah Fire Department.
The crash remains under investigation. State police say charges may be pending.
