UPDATE 12/17/25: This article has been updated after the coroner’s office released a correction on the spelling of the first name of a man fatally shot Wednesday.

A 36-year-old man was fatally shot and a child also was shot Wednesday at the Greystone Apartments in Cahokia Heights, the site of two other shootings, including a homicide, earlier this year.

Demario Johnson of 241 Miller Court in the apartment complex was identified as the homicide victim on Wednesday, St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said. Johnson was pronounced deceased at 9:59 a.m. in the emergency room of Touchette Regional Hospital in Cahokia Heights.

Dye said the shooting occurred at Johnson’s address.

The medical condition of the child was not released on Wednesday, and no arrests have been announced.

Other details about the shooting also were not available, Cahokia Heights Police Chief Thomas L. Trice said at the scene.

In June, 19-year-old Quan Vaughn was fatally shot at the apartment complex located off Missouri Avenue and in July, a 12-year-old child was shot at the complex. Two men were charged in connection with Vaughn’s death.

Wednesday’s shooting follows a double homicide that occurred over the weekend in the 3900 block of Walnut Street in Cahokia Heights. A “person of interest” was arrested Tuesday in this case, but charges had not been filed as of Wednesday morning, according to the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis.

The Belleville News-Democrat in August published an article about tenants’ complaints about leaks, mold, crime and inadequate heating and air conditioning issues at the Greystone complex.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is released by the police department.
