The chief judges in St. Clair and Madison counties announced schedule changes Monday to prevent the spread of coronavirus, including a limit on how many people can attend courthouse weddings and civil unions.
In St. Clair County, all civil cases will be rescheduled until Friday, April 10, at the latest; the change doesn’t affect felony, DUI or domestic violence cases. Madison County is also pushing court dates back for everything but “emergent or timely matters.”
The announcement comes after health officials identified three cases of the COVID-19 respiratory illness in the metro-east. Two people in St. Clair County and one person in Clinton County have tested positive.
County officials have banned gatherings of more than 50 people.
And for the next month, the only people who can attend courthouse weddings are the two people getting married.
Couples are being asked not to bring their friends or family to their courthouse ceremonies in Belleville or Edwardsville.
